"Cirkus" (2022) Box Office Collection
“Cirkus”, directed by Rohit Shetty and released in December 2022, was a star-studded comedy film featuring Ranveer Singh in a dual role, alongside Pooja Hegde, Jacqueline Fernandez, and a supporting cast including Varun Sharma, Johnny Lever, and others. The film, which was loosely inspired by the play The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare, aimed to offer a fun, nostalgic ride with slapstick humor and a colorful circus backdrop. Despite the big names involved and Rohit Shetty's commercial appeal, Cirkus struggled to make a significant impact at the box office.
The film had a lukewarm start, grossing around ₹6.5 crore (approximately
$800,000) on its opening day in India. This opening was considered
disappointing, especially given the high-profile cast and Shetty’s reputation
for delivering blockbuster hits, particularly in the comedy and action genres. Cirkus
aimed to be a family entertainer with broad appeal, but it faced challenges in
drawing in a large audience, especially with competition from other films and
the lack of positive word-of-mouth. Despite some initial excitement for its
colorful visuals and comedic elements, the film’s reception from both critics
and audiences was mixed, which led to slower growth at the box office.
Over the opening weekend, Cirkus showed only modest improvement,
grossing around ₹20-25 crore (approximately $2.5-3 million) in its first few
days. However, it faced significant drop-offs in the following week, with most
of its earnings coming from single-screen theaters and smaller towns, where the
film’s slapstick comedy found some traction. Major urban centers, where
expectations were higher, showed less enthusiasm. By the end of its first week,
the film had grossed approximately ₹35-40 crore (around $4-5 million) in India,
which was seen as underwhelming given its budget and promotional campaign.
Ultimately, Cirkus ended its theatrical run with a total box
office collection of around ₹60-65 crore (approximately $7-8 million) in India,
and around ₹85-90 crore (approximately $10-11 million) worldwide. This total
was a far cry from the kind of box office numbers expected from a Rohit Shetty
film, particularly one starring a popular actor like Ranveer Singh. The film’s
performance highlighted a mismatch between audience expectations and what was
delivered on screen. Despite its commercial disappointment, Cirkus
remained a high-profile film, but it underlined the challenge of crafting
successful large-scale comedies in the increasingly competitive Bollywood
landscape.
